The Chicago Blackhawks got their start back in 1926, under the ownership of “Major” Frederick McLaughlin, a WWI vet who named the team after the “Blackhawk Division” he commanded during the war. McLaughlin was known for his habit of firing coaches (one lasted only two games) and his strong preference for American players. During his tenure, the Blackhawks won two Stanley Cups (1934 & 1938).
The Blackhawks made the Stanley Cup Finals again in 1944 but lost to the Montreal Canadiens in four games.
